Q: What is a Barrister?

A: A Barrister is an expert in the Law who has been called to the “Bar”. You would have seen them on TV, think Rumpole of the Bailey and, more recently, Silk. They are mostly self employed practitioners who will give independent advice and represent you in Court or Tribunal.

Q: What can a barrister do?

A: A barrister can provide expert advice and opinions, draft documents and attend Court to represent you. Some are also able to conduct litigation after attending a short course; we can provide barristers who offer this service if required.

Q: I didn’t know I could instruct a barrister as a member of the public?

A: After a rule change in the early 2000s, barristers have been able to accept instructions from the public without the need for a solicitor. Instructing a barrister will give you more control of your case and access to the advocate of your choosing more readily available.

Q: Why would it be cheaper to instruct a barrister first?

A: Barristers would traditionally have lower overheads than your typical Solicitors firm, meaning they can charge less and generally as a fixed fee. Additionally, you will only be paying for one expert instead of both a solicitor then a barrister. We can quote you an all-in fixed cost or in stages to suit your needs.
